The painting and Technique
of Raffaele Rossi
My Painting style is based on the matter, on its metamorphosis, a theme that is tightly related to the philosophical concepts connected with alchemy and anthroposophy, which I am absolutely fond of and inspire the titles of most of my works, such as "L'Argonauta" (The Argonaut) "Vaso Alchemico" (Alchemic vase) "Gli strumenti per il viaggio" (The instruments for the journey) "Trasmutando" (Trasmuting) and others.
I prefer opaque, light absorbing surfaces, rich of aspects and matter to the point that, at times, I almost come close to the sculptural bas-relief art.
My paintings are performed on wooden panels, on which a glue-based layer of plaster is spread. This is composed of lime mixed with coloured sands and marble dusts. On other occasions, the layer is made up of Bologna gypsum and Lapin glue, worked in such a way that some areas are left in relief and other are smoothed down.
Then, thin layers of coloured lime and natural earths-gathered and purified by myself-start to characterise the painting. There I operate, while the plaster is still wet, with my fingers, with charcoal stick, with scratching instruments and colourful strokes, creating incisions, abrasions and bright areas.
The colours I use are temperaa and oil, many of them personally prepared.
